Adams Produce Says Goodbye to One of Their Iconic Figures

BIRMINGHAM, AL January 12, 2009 – Adams Produce Company, the largest independently owned produce specialist in the Southeastern United States, announced the passing of one of their company’s iconic figures, Carl Adams Jr. Carl was born on April 11, 1917 in Birmingham, Alabama and passed away on January 10th, 2009. Carl was married to his beloved wife, Betty Bryding DeVore for 61 years. Carl received his BSME from the University of Alabama in 1938 and went on to serve our country during WWII where he was awarded the Bronze Star. After the War, Carl returned to Birmingham and the family business, Adams Brothers Produce Inc. He became president and treasurer of the company in 1964 and served in that capacity until his retirement in 1995. During that time he sat on numerous boards and committees including the Birmingham Salvation Army Advisory Board, for which he served for 30-years.  Carl Adams Jr. is survived by his wife, Betty and other family members including those involved in today’s business at Adams Produce Company, Carl Adams III (son), Carl Adams IV (grandson) and John Gentle (son in-law). 

Scott Grinstead, Chief Executive Officer for Adams Produce Companies, issued the following statement; “This is a very sad day for the Adams family, friends, the produce industry and our entire organization. Carl Adams Jr. was instrumental in the building of our company, and we will carry on his legacy through hard work and dedication to our employees, our customers and our community.”
